Artist's Statement
Beauty and power of place inspire my work and the energy of contrast enlivens it. I am drawn to both the dramatic and the subtle. I seek to capture the essence peculiar to a moment and an environment. It is this personal interpretation of moments in nature, intimate and reflective, that is thematically consistent throughout my work. The results are images sometimes symbolic and mythical, sometimes meditative, and sometimes purely aesthetic. Tension, complexity, and rhythm are fundamental to the structure and surprise and sensuality to the content and the aesthetics.
My choice of medium for a particular series can be intuitive–a matter of moment–or deliberate. Discovery is part of my artistic process regardless of that choice. I work digitally with a foundation of photography—layering, blending, then printing on the rich velvet surface of the archival digital paper or with brush and paint, layering, glazing, on the palpable surface of watercolor paper.
